Medicare Coverage for Blood Pressure Monitors: All You Need to Know
Medicare provides coverage for blood pressure monitors as durable medical equipment — but eligibility, supplier requirements, and documentation rules matter. Here is how to get the device you need covered.
Are you a Medicare beneficiary looking to better manage your blood pressure? Understanding your coverage for blood pressure monitors is vital for both your health and your budget. Medicare provides coverage for certain medical devices — including blood pressure monitors — but specific guidelines and requirements apply.
Types of Blood Pressure Monitors Covered by Medicare
Medicare covers a variety of blood pressure monitors, recognizing the importance of monitoring blood pressure as a key component of managing cardiovascular health:
Automatic Digital Monitors The most common type covered. User-friendly, providing accurate readings quickly. Features often include large displays, memory functions, and the ability to store multiple readings — ideal for home use.
Manual Sphygmomanometers Sometimes covered for patients trained in their use. Requires the user to inflate a cuff manually and listen for blood flow sounds using a stethoscope.
Specialized Monitors Medicare may cover monitors designed for patients with specific medical conditions, such as hypertension or heart disease. These may include additional features like automatic high-reading alerts or connectivity to smartphone apps.
Medicare Coverage Criteria
To qualify for coverage of blood pressure monitors under Medicare, three criteria must be met:
-
Medical Necessity: The monitor must be deemed medically necessary by a qualified healthcare provider — essential for diagnosing or managing a condition such as hypertension.
-
Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Classification: The blood pressure monitor must be classified as DME — equipment prescribed by a physician for use in the home, expected to last for an extended period.
-
Approved Supplier: The device must be obtained from a Medicare-approved supplier. Buying from a non-approved supplier means Medicare will not pay.
How to Get a Blood Pressure Monitor Covered
Step 1: Schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider for evaluation. The provider will determine if the monitor is medically necessary and provide the appropriate prescription.
Step 2: Choose a Medicare-approved supplier. Verify the specific monitor model is covered under Medicare, as not all devices may be eligible.
Step 3: Place an order through the approved supplier. The supplier typically handles claims submission to Medicare for reimbursement.
Out-of-Pocket Costs
After meeting your Part B deductible, Medicare generally covers 80% of the approved amount for covered DME — meaning you pay the remaining 20%. With a Medigap supplement, this 20% may be covered entirely.
| Coverage Type | What You Pay | |--------------|-------------| | Part B (with deductible met) | 20% of approved amount | | Medicare Advantage | Varies; often $0–$25 copay | | Medigap supplement | Often $0 after Part B pays |
Blood Pressure Monitoring in RPM Programs
It is important to note the distinction between owning a personal blood pressure monitor (covered as DME under the criteria above) and participating in a Remote Patient Monitoring program (covered under CPT 99453/99454).
In iScript.care's RPM program, patients receive cellular-connected blood pressure monitors as part of the program — with data transmitted automatically to the clinical team. This is billed under RPM codes, not DME codes. Patients in our RPM program do not need to separately obtain a monitor through the DME pathway.
Tips for Navigating Coverage
- Confirm your provider specifies "medically necessary for home blood pressure management" on the prescription
- Use the Medicare Supplier Directory at medicare.gov to find approved suppliers in your area
- Request an Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) if there is any question about coverage to understand your financial responsibility upfront
- For RPM program participants — your device is provided and covered as part of the program
